Training based on your own records
Generic tutorials show you which buttons to press. What most people need is to know which buttons to press for their business: how to code a particular supplier, what to do with a payment that covers three invoices, or why the VAT figure has changed. Our training is one-to-one, delivered remotely by screen share, and built around your own accounting file.
Who it's for
- Business owners doing their own bookkeeping for the first time.
- New staff or bookkeepers taking over an existing file.
- Teams that have just moved to a new package.
- Anyone who has had their records cleaned up and wants to keep them that way.
Topics we can cover
Daily and weekly tasks
Reconciling bank transactions, creating invoices and bills, matching payments, capturing receipts and using bank rules sensibly.
Month and quarter end
Checking reconciliations, reviewing aged debtors and creditors, preparing for the VAT return and spotting common errors before they reach HMRC.
Reports
Reading the profit and loss account and balance sheet, and setting up simple reports that help you run the business.
Specific features
CIS, multi-currency, projects or tracking categories, e-commerce clearing accounts and other features relevant to you.
How sessions work
- We start with a short conversation about your business, your software and what you want to learn.
- We review your file beforehand, using the software's accountant or advisor invitation, so the session focuses on real examples. We never ask for your password.
- Sessions take place by screen share, with you working in your own records while we guide.
- Afterwards you receive brief notes covering the steps we went through.
If we find significant errors during preparation, we'll tell you before training starts, as it is usually better to correct them first through services like bank reconciliation problems or historical error correction. Training is about using the software well; technical faults or account and subscription issues remain with the provider's support team.
What you'll need
A computer with a reliable connection, access to your own accounting software and a list of the tasks or problems you'd like to cover. If you haven't yet set up your package, we can combine training with accounting software setup. For packages we often help with, see our pages on FreeAgent help and Xero support.

Frequently asked questions
Is the training done in person or remotely?
Training is remote, by screen share. You work in your own accounting software while we guide you and explain each step. This avoids travel, means we can use real examples from your records, and makes it easy to fit shorter sessions around your working day.
Which accounting software can you train us on?
We provide training on the main cloud packages, including Xero, QuickBooks Online, FreeAgent and Sage Accounting. We're accountants who use these packages regularly with clients, rather than official vendor trainers, so the focus is on keeping your bookkeeping accurate in practice.
Can you train a new member of staff who's taking over our bookkeeping?
Yes. We can review the file first, explain how it has been set up and why, and then walk the new person through the routines they'll be responsible for. Written notes afterwards give them a reference to come back to.
Will training help me avoid paying for clean-ups later?
Good habits make a big difference. Most errors we correct come from a handful of repeated mistakes, such as miscoded receipts, unmatched payments or wrong VAT codes. Training focused on those areas helps you keep records accurate, though we'd still recommend a periodic review.
